Description

This is the Mona Lisa. Well known to be painted by Leonardo DaVinci during the Italian Renaissance, where artists learned a great deal on how to make more realistic paintings.

Though the painting itself is important in art history, people undoubtedly over-hype this painting. There are tens of thousands of other portraits that are on par with this painting or even better. If one goes to the Louvre, people crowd around this average looking painting to take a picture on their phone while they are surrounded by several other beautiful pieces of art. What do people think about when they consider the Mona Lisa? Do they really make personal emotional ties to the painting? I personally don't feel much when I see the painting. I can get much more from a student made art piece that directly challenges modern-day difficulties.
What does this mean for the validity of the Mona Lisa? Why do we put so much importance into this painting? What if we did not listen to what the art fanatics said and just saw art for our own interpretations?
