Spirit Cartes de Visite

Subject

Spirit Photography

Description

This article from Punch Magazine examines spirit photography through a sarcastic lens. The process of capturing "invisible ghosts" on camera is parodied and the author questions the validity of claims of capturing ghosts in photographs. While scoffing at those who attempt to spirit photography, the criteria for doing so is discussed, specifically the requirement of light, which is contrary to traditional beliefs of the best way to encounter spirits. While this article pokes fun at spirit photography, the fact that it is being discussed is evidence of the popularity of this activity, Whether one believed a ghost could actually be captured in a photograph or not, many people were willing to try and find out.
