Prefatory Note from A Changed Man and Other Tales

This note appears in within the first few pages of Thomas Hardy's collection, A Changed Man and Other Tales. He says he has compiled a dozen of his "minor novels" into this collection, so that readers may be able to access his stories easier. Being published in 1913, about a little over 25 years have passed since "Alicia's Diary" was first released to the public through serialization in newspapers. Hardy's choice to include "Alicia's Diary" in this collection suggest the lasting popularity or relevance of the story, over two decades after its origin. Hardy would not have put this story in this collection if he did not think that his readers would appreciate it.
