Cover of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine: January 1896 Issue

Description

This is the cover of the magazine which first published Margaret Oliphant's piece, "The Library Window." Oliphant's piece was the first story to be read when opening this issue. I just find it interesting because when looking at the cover, it is very male oriented. The cover is illustrated with a portrait of the magazine's founder. The publishing company which the magazine is published under is, William Blackwood & Sons, is displayed in a font size one cannot overlook. So the contrast of a very male oriented publication to then host Margaret Oliphant as one of its primary contributors as well as feature her story as the opening story seems unprecedented for its time. While I am sure other publications followed suit, I am also sure it was not as common to do so. After further research, I have found that Blackwood's published more than one of Oliphant's pieces and a few of them were debuts. Clearly this magazine supported Oliphant and her career.
