Description
In response to the passage from Thomas Hardy's "The Imaginative Woman" which portrays the mundane life that most women share in Victorian Society in lieu of marriage, as well as the role women are then confined to, I am sharing a poem by Christina Rossetti (provided by the British Library) titled "In An Artists Studio." The poem is followed by the date of entry, December 24th 1856. This poem reflects the reality that women face being pigeonholed into certain roles. Rossetti uses the example of model for the use of a painter, and uses phrases such as "one face," "one selfsame figure" and "a nameless girl" to describe her in relation to the artists and eventual viewers of the artists work.
