Title
Oscar Wilde's Guided Journal
Subject
Wilde's responses to guided questions
Description
These images are taken from the guided journal of Oscar Wilde. It is a rather odd format because it is not unlike the human interest pieces that contemporary magazines make regarding celebrities today. In fact, some of the same questions are asked, including favorite hour of the day ("post hour"), favorite time of year ("beginning of autumn") and even favorite musicians ("Mozart ... Chopin"). Though this tells us quite little about his written work, it does offer a deeper look into the man behind the work. His answers actually reveal quite a bit about him: his ultimate goal in life was "success: fame or even noteriety," and he was actually quite full of himself: his favorite amusement is listed as "writing sonnets" and his favorite occupation is "reading [his] own sonnets." Many words could be used to describe Wilde, but humble is certainly not one of them.
