Description

St. Gerome was a European artist, who designed the beautifully detailed illustrations for Olive Schreiner's "Dreams". The book itself was printed on hand-made Roycroft watermarked paper, while the illustrations were inked with brown ink. The elegant medieval typography was created by Andrew Andrews. The illustration on the left page is an intricate medieval design of a pilgrim gazing off into the distance, a distance with a backdrop embellished in enchanting swirls of ornate flowers and a large bird up above. The depiction is encapsulated by another illustration of intertwining vines, interlocked with flowers. The title page is superimposed enlaced with a similar design of vines and flowers, framed, or protected, by large white birds and encased flowers. Both depictions may be designed to emulate Schreiner's feministic views and search for a nonrestrictive society.
