After the Second Amendment: The Past and Future of Gun Culture

Welcome to my Omeka Site! This site accompanies my podcast entitled "After the Second Amendment". Play the podcast file on the screen to give it a listen.

Artifact #1: This is the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution. It was ratified in 1971 and was written by James Madison. At the time, it was only supposed to be directed towards state militias, but has become a staple in the pro-gun argument.

Artifact #2: In Federalist no. 46, James Madison states, "The state government with the people on their side would be able to repel the danger... A standing army can be carried in any country able to bear arms". This statement shows James Madison's support for state militias and proves that the Second Amendment was written to support these militias, not be an individual right to bear arms.
