Empire Francais Flag

A French Imperial Flag, date unknown

This scene in an engraving from the English-language version of "Les Frères Chrétiennes Pendant la Guerre 1870-1871" shows soldiers from Brittany giving their parish flag to the Christian Brothers in Nantes as a token of gratitude for their service.

According to oral tradition, the flag pictured below was also given to the Christian Brothers in gratitude, perhaps in a ceremony similar to the scene above, for their service during the Franco-Prussian War.  The Flag was subsequently taken to the United States and is now part of the Manhattan College Archives Collection.
