The image is of the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. This is one of the earliest known photographs of Italy being that it was taken in 1841 by Alexander John Ellis. The photograph was later used in a collection called the 'Italy Deguerreotyped'. Deguerreotype was the first publicly used form of photography that was created in 1830's, and it was the main form of photography used in the mid 19th century. The collection that this image appeared was the first prominent collection of photograph's from Italy.
