Title
Chowringhee Road. Panoramic View from the [Ochterlony] Monument [Calcutta]
Description
This is an image of a panorama of Chowringhee Road from the Ochterlony Monument in Calcutta. Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, is a city in India. A glimpse south of Chowringhee Road in 1868 is provided by this photograph. This panorama represents and encapsulates the ideas held within Lily Ford's article, “Virtual reality, 19th Century style: The history of the panorama and balloon view.” In this article, Ford illuminates the manner in which the panorama had created a suitable perspective for the sights that could be observed from the hot air balloon. This city can be viewed by this panorama, as well as by a hot air balloon, and being able to see it as a panorama can form the mindset that is referred to by Ford. This photograph parallels Ford's descriptions regarding a panorama’s ability to allow the observer to attain a visualization and understanding of the scope that could be captured within the view of a city by providing a sight of the city of Kolkata from an elevation. This sight enables the viewer to see the details contained within this region at the time of its portrayal.
