Title

The Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes, "The Final Problem"

Description

The chapter called "The Final Problem" is the case that features James Moriarty, also known as the 'Napoleon Of Crime'. Considering the Sherlock piece that we read in class I intended read this story as a means of analyzing Sherlock's great rival and determine how he was described in this story.

I do find it interesting that the description of him by Sherlock Holmes shows him to appear like a normal person. Earlier on in the story Sherlock credits Moriarty for the work that he had done as a professor and mentions how besting him would remove all of the strain from his life. However, Moriarty had 'a criminal strain run in his blood' which predisposed him to evil and somewhat influenced his current position.

In the one interview that Sherlock had with Moriarty near the beginning of the story he is presented with something that differentiates him from the typical villain. It is clear that he has some extra knowledge, and his words spilled from his mouth with the clear intent to show that. He intended to have his criminal activities hidden in such a way that Holmes wouldn't even have a scene to investigate.
