Subject
Portraits of Mrs. Beerbohm Tree at different points of her life
Description
This appeared in the same July 1981 edition of The Strand Magazine that "A Scandal in Bohemia" was printed in. This page comes from a section of the magazine entitled, "Portraits of Celebrities at Different Points in Their Lives". Each celebrity, 5 males and 2 females had a page dedicated to their description and their various images. Mrs. Beerbohm was one of the female celebrities showcased in this section. Mrs. Beerbohm was said to have many admirers due to the intelligence and beauty she brings to the arts. She is further described as an "intelligent child growing into the gifted girl, and giving every promise of the cultivated, accomplished woman". Pages later, the character of Irene Adler is introduced in Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Scandal in Bohemia". Adler is a strong woman, who stands up for herself and was adored by many for the way she was. Sherlock Holmes is completely taken by her, based off the fact that she was able to recognize his tricks and out smart him. It seems that Mrs. Beerbohm Tree, in her description, has the same intelligence and beauty as Irene Adler. By highlighting Mrs. Beerbohm Tree in this section, the magazine chooses to showcase these two admired females, perhaps as a way of situating these strong figures on the same level.
