Plate 15: Rendcomb Park and Cowley Manor

Title
Plate 15: Rendcomb Park and Cowley Manor
Description
This is an image of Rendcomb Park and Cowley Manor, which I think would be a close representation of the Manor in which Mr. Denton is staying in in "The Diary of Mr. Poynter." I thought this would be an interesting item because it gives a better idea of the upper class living conditions at the time this short story takes place. In class we discussed the newfound importance of interior decor and physical vanity at the time, and the exterior of this Manor also reflects how decadent and intricate these new styles were. You can see in the image that there are intricate carvings or engravings on the moldings of each floor, which must have taken lots of planning and also lots of time to actually execute. On top of this picture directly relating to our reading and class discussion, the format of this image has a lot of relation also. This image was developed or printed from an etching plate, which we discussed when learning about the function of and process of using the daguerreotype. This image not only shows the cultural implications of the era, but also shows the technological advances.
