The Bethesda Terrace fountain

Subject

The Bethesda Terrace fountain

Description

Here is the fountain in the Bethesda Terrace, one of, if not, my favorite places in Central Park to go. The actual name of the fountain is ‘Angel of the Waters.’ The statue was designed by Emma Stebbins in 1868 and revealed in 1873. According to sources, Stebbins was the first woman to receive a public commission for a major work of art in New York City. Interestingly, it is the only statue in the park called for in the original design.
