The Stonewall Riots

Subject

Event in LGBTQ+ History

Description

In the middle of the night on June 27th, 1969, the New York City Police Department conducted a raid against the Stonewall Inn. 13 violent arrests were made during the police raid that night, and in response to the violent and discriminatory measure taken by the NYPD, hundreds of individuals gathered outside the Stonewall Inn in protest. The demonstrations quickly turned violent as tensions between the LGBTQ+ community and the police escalated, resulting in the violence spreading throughout Greenwich Village over the next few days. On the one year anniversary of these riots, NYC hosted the first ever Pride parade and festival to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and strength in the face of police violence and societal oppression. The Stonewall Riots have since been considered the seminal event of LGBTQ+ history in the United States, and are credited as sparking the modern LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Movement, and resulting social and legal advancements for the LGBTQ+ community.
