Stonewall Uprising

Subject

Documentary portraying the Stonewall Riots of 1969

Description

This 2010 documentary was directed by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, and was based on the book "Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay Revolution," which was written by historian David Carter. The documentary film traces the LGBTQ+ community throughout the American 1960s, and surrounding social climate, before depicting the events of the Stonewall Riots in June of 1969. The historical accuracy and emotional impact of this documentary is achieved through its series of interviews with individuals who partook in the Stonewall Riots, in addition to its emphasis on the build-up of the LGBTQ+ community's breaking point during the now infamous police raids on the night June 27th. Following its premiere at the Film Forum in NYC, the 82 minute film aired on PBS on April 25, 2011 as an episode of the network's "The American Experience."
