Love and Resistance: Stonewall 50
Subject
An Ongoing Exhibition at the New York Public Library
Description
“This season, The New York Public Library is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Through a major exhibition, a series of programs, book recommendations, and more, we invite you to learn more about the emergence of the modern LGBTQ movement, as well as culture, issues, and activism today.” – nypl.org
As the most premier research library in New York City, and itself serving as a memorial to the city and its unique history, the Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue is hosting a free exhibition memorializing and archiving the history of the Stonewall Inn, the 1969 riots, the establishment’s influence on the LGBTQ+community, and the Gay Rights Movement as a whole. Titled Love & Resistance: Stonewall 50, this exhibition runs from February 14 through July 14 this year on the third floor of the library. The exhibit will combine visual, historical, and film-based accounts of the history of the Stonewall Inn, in addition to a calendar of interactive community events and educational experiences.
The inclusion of the history of the Stonewall Inn in memorization at the New York Public Library’s most famed location is indicative of the importance of the establishment and the impact of the events which occurred in its wake in June 1969. In this 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, it is imperative to spread the narrative of these events beyond the barriers of the LGBTQ+ community and include individuals of all sexualities, genders, ages, and races in discussions of LGBTQ+ history.
