COVID-19 & A Rise in Collectivism

This page and these artifacts correspond with the argument I make in the first part of the podcast: The United States will become more collectivistic. Particularly for the next 5 years, but the effects will linger until around the 10 year mark, and then the country will revert to the level of individualism that we’ve grown accustomed to.

Artifact #2: This graph shows rising levels of self-expression across a variety of different societies over time. While all the lines show rising levels of individualism, one line on the graph clearly sticks out as being much higher than the others: the Advanced Industrial Democracies line (which includes countries such as Australia, Ireland, Italy, Span, France, Canada and the United States). I chose this artifact because it illustrates that over time, the U.S. has been documented as having significantly higher rates of individualism and self-expression. This prefaces why my predicted rise in collectivism and decreased individualism is so significant.

Artifact #3: I chose this artifact because it shows the correlation between unemployment rates and individualism. Essentially, the higher the unemployment level, the less individualistic we become. This is significant for my prediction of rising collectivism/decreasing individualism because unemployment rates have risen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Graph A: As the unemployment rate increases, the annual importance assigned to thinking for oneself decreases. (A sign of decreasing indiviudalism)
  • Graph B: As the unemployment rate rises, the importance of helping others increases. (A sign of decreasing indiviudalism)
  • Graph C: As unemployment rates increase, the importance of being well liked and popular increases as well. (A sign of a less emphasis being placed on individualism)
