Fearless Girl Facing Down the Charging Bull
Mayor de Blasio Announces Fearless Girl Statue to Stay in NYC

On March 7, 2017, the Fearless Girl was placed at the Bowling Green location in front of the Charging Bull in between the hours of 4am and 6am.  This mimicked the style of how artist Artur DiModica installed the Charging Bull statue in the early hours of December 15, 1989. The artist of the Fearless Girl, Kristen Visbal, had created this statue for a financial firm named State Street Global Advisors whose goal was to “raise awareness about the importance of gender diversity in corporate leadership.”

The Fearless Girl statue was created and placed out in public at the beginning of 2017, a time where the United States was still at a loss for its identity. This is evident in the fact that Donald Trump, a man who to this day raises controversy amongst the American people, became president of the country. On January 20th, Donald J. Trump officially became the 45th president of the United States. The next day, millions of people throughout the nation and the world marched in their respective Women’s March.

With this, anything surrounding the right of women and their identity and roles was proven to be of priority in the discourse of society. Not only was the statue created and placed during a time where people were speaking out against the inequalities women face in their day to day lives, but the statue was also brought into the eyes of the public on the eve of International Women’s Day, this only heightened the vision that the statue represents.

When the extension for the Fearless Girl to remain at her location at Bowling Green with the Charging Bull was announced Mayor of New York City, Warren Wilhelm Jr. DeBlasio, stated to the press the importance of the statue and why it should remain in association with Di Modica’s statue. At this press conference Mayor DeBlasio states, “I think there’s an even broader symbolism of standing up to fear, standing up to power, being able to find in yourself the strength to do what’s right.”
