Artifact #3: Supermarket Self-Checkouts and Retail Theft: The Curious Case of the SWIPERS

The article examines the impact of the switch to SCO on retail theft. Based on current market research surveys indicating that as many as thirty percent of consumers routinely steal from supermarkets when using SCO, the paper describes the origins of a new type of shoplifter known as "the SWIPERS" and provides a typology of these thieves.
