The Famous Copper Frieze

A Distinctive Facade Is Recreated at New Yankee Stadium

There's arguably no other piece of architecture in a sports venue that is as important as the "frieze" in Yankee Stadium. Yankee Stadium's frieze is an iconic piece of architecture. It lined the roof of the original Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 2008 and is replicated on the current stadium's roof.

The facade was an addition made by Osborn Engineering, when the owners of the Yankees asked that the stadium be given "an air of dignity". The shape was known to be completely original and it has been a part of the team's and the stadium's symbol over nearly the past century.

It's interesting because from my recollection, there's no other stadium that has anything like that and the fact that it's been there since the inception of the first Yankee Stadium makes it that much more iconic. Even the YES Network's (Yankees Channel) logo includes the frieze.
