Bill Clinton's Motorcade Drives Past a Mural of Bobby Sands
A poignant moment from President Clinton’s visit to Belfast is when he drives by one of Belfast’s famous political murals, this one depicting Bobby Sands. Sands was one of the most famous, and almost mythological, figures to come out of The Troubles. He had become more symbol than actual man through his leadership in the Hunger Strikes and election to Parliament. The image of the President of the United States driving past his mural is striking in its symbolism. In the background, one sees a symbol of the tension born out of The Troubles. In the front, one sees a symbol of hope and the possibility of a peace agreement.
