Izzy: a news report about a camper

Isabella, or to most at camp, Izzy, is a young girl from San Antonio who attends Camp Reynal. Camp Reynal is a camp dedicated to empowering children with kidney and urology diseases that is hosted on the facility of Camp John Marc. This news report follows Izzy as she tells her story about her disease and her experience at camp. Throughout the video, we watch as Izzy waddles around camp with a big smile on her face. We watch as she’s dancing and jumping into the deep end of the pool.

However, upon watching the intro of the news cast, one might notice the reporters use of the words “debilitating” and “battling”, referring to Izzy’s disease. When you go to camp, the kids there do not act abnormally or as if their illness prevents them from moving forward. In fact, most of them would probably take offense to the word “debilitating”. Camp John Marc offers a variety of physical activities campers to participate in.

While the diseases that most of Camp Reynal’s campers have are quite possibly life threatening, this does not prevent them from participating in their primary identity as kids. Camp teaches these kids that life goes on, even if it’s after a transplant or while on medication or on dialysis. They are empowered by introducing them to people they can relate to. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to places like Camp John Marc. So, they must look for role models elsewhere to be empowered.
