Sarah Hyland interview about her struggle with kidney dysplasia

In this video, Sarah Hyland, a 28 year old actress, discusses her life with kidney dysplasia and endometriosis. Kidney dysplasia is a condition that occurs as a malformation of the kidneys prenatally. Endometriosis is a disorder where the uterine lining grows on the outside of the ovarian system as opposed to within the uterus. Both health conditions can physically alter a person’s body and way of life. However, Hyland recounts more of her psychological struggle with the two conditions.

Hyland explains that the hardest part of going through kidney failure, not only once but twice, was the mental toll it took on her. She struggled with depression, suicidal thoughts, and the possibility of letting down her family. The actress put an emphasis on her time spent on the set of Modern Family, contributing to the art that she loves and the time with both her blood family and her onscreen family. These are the pastimes that inspired and empowered Hyland to push through the idea of being sick.

Sarah Hyland’s story of overpowering her illness can be broadcasted to other “sick kids” as a way to empower them, much like the purpose that Camp John Marc serves. While the act of going to camp and finding others like yourself is very important, it is sometimes not as accessible. Having a role model that you can look up to that has gone through the same circumstances can be just as empowering as living a like-minded experience with others.
