Illusion or Reality?

Rotated Room

Am I really hanging upside down?

The Museum of Illusion is certainly filled with various illusions as one may presume. The museum commemorates the idea that the way in which we perceive the world is often an illusion. The spaces in the museum work to set a reminder that everyone perceives specific objects or even aspects differently than how we ourselves view and understand them. In addition, social media also shapes the way in which we view or experience these spaces and objects. After seeing the trending pictures of people in these fascinating spaces I decided to visit the museum.

The name of this exhibit within the museum is known as the “Rotated Room”. As can be seen, I appear to be hanging upside down in this image. However, the illusion is that the room is actually configured sideways. Meaning in person the bench is actually hanging from the wall. However, if I conform my body in a certain position or angle I am able to assist in creating an illusion. Now one may ask, what exactly finalizes the illusion? Your cell phone rotation option that is. After capturing the image, click on the edit option that enables you to rotate the photo. The photo is to be rotated until it looks like you have done something nearly impossible.

The image itself is a replica of the hundred other photos on Instagram that consist of other individuals posing the same way as I am. For instance, I did not even attempt to think of other ways that I can create an illusion other than the poses I’ve seen other individuals post on Instagram. These pictures however create a one sided story for audiences who have never seen the fascinating space in person. People like myself where tricked by the illusion to believe that these individuals were actually hanging upside down. Social media has recreated this museum into convincing individuals that this museum is bigger than what it actually is and filled with various configurations of illusions.
