Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope

In this image it allows for one to create a kaleidoscope of oneself. So instead of looking into a toy tube expecting to see mirrors containing colorful pieces of glass, the illusion is that images of yourself is in the tube. The exhibit is simply known as “Kaleidoscope”. It is a large mirror that is cut into different shapes just as an actual kaleidoscope appears. Likewise, the illusion becomes seeing oneself as the reflection which is impossible to do in an actual kaleidoscope. It’s as simple as standing in front of a mirror and taking a picture as you can see my friend and I have purposefully done in the image.

In order to fully capture the illusion, the goal would be to have someone else take the picture behind you from a specific angle where the phone cannot be seen. Once it is captured the only thing visible is your face. The image illustrates your face to appear in a circle from various different and angles just as a real kaleidoscope appears when you look inside of it. This exhibit is interesting because it is not easy to tell what the illusion is to be created off first glance. Likewise, this becomes one of the exhibits that require Instagram as a guide of instruction to reveal how it is to be used.

As I have mentioned the exhibit itself appears just as a random circular mirror on the wall. What’s the illusion? Is probably the first thing that comes to mind upon looking at the mirror on the wall. No worries, Instagram will tell you exactly what to do in this exhibit just as it will with most exhibits within the museum.
