COVID-19 & Rise in Technology Use

This page and these artifacts correspond with the argument I make in the first part of the podcast: The Children who have grown up during the COVID-19 Pandemic will become more technology-dependent. Particularly for the next 5 years, but the effects will continue to happen, and then we will become technologically dependent

Artifact #2: This graph shows rising levels of people spending time playing video games during the Covid-19 pandemic. While all the lines show rising levels of gameplay, one line on the graph clearly sticks out as being much higher than others: the number of times a day people play the game. I chose this artifact because it illustrates that people are spending more time inside playing on technology rather than being more social in an outside setting.

  • Figure 4:  Pre-outbreak gameplay habits, 10.5% of respondents reported playing video games several times a day prior to the pandemic
  • Figure 5: Post-outbreak gameplay habits, there was a 40% increase of respondents reporting playing video games serval times a day after the pandemic

Artifact #3: In the 2020 article by the Parents Together Foundation they provide useful insight into how the average time children spend on technology has significantly increased. This insight will be useful to understand how children's use of technology has increased and will continue to do so over the next 5 years.

Artifact #4 In Imran, Zeshan, & Pervaiz's 2020 article, “ Mental health considerations for children & adolescents in the COVID-19 Pandemic” they provide insightful information on how social media does have many benefits but it also has many negative effects as well. In the 9/11 case, we can see how excessive screen time Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health disorders. This insight will be useful to understand how children's increased use of technology can have a negative impact.
