Survivor Tree

On September 11, 2001 many lives were lost. It was and still is to many to remeber all those who lost their lives on that horrific day. There are museums and tributes to memorialze these indivduals. One way these inviduals are remebered is by the Surviorver Tree. This tree can be located at the 9/11 memorial. It stands tall to remeber all the indivduals who lost their lives on 9/11. This included first responders and inidvduals who were in the Twin Towers.

The Survivor Tree is a callery pear tree. In October 2001, the tree was discovered at Ground Zero. The tree was destroyed, with snapped roots and burned and broken branches. After finding this, the tree was removed from the rubble. It was then placed in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. After being in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation the tree returned to the memorial in 2010. Today, the tree stands as a living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth.

The 9/11 Memorial states, "the Survivor Tree embodies our nation’s spirit of hope and healing, strength and resilience in the wake of the 9/11 attacks." Every year new seeds are planted from the Survivor Tree. The 9/11 Memorial states, "Each year, the 9/11 Memorial gives seedlings from the Survivor Tree to three communities that have endured tragedy in recent years. The Survivor Tree seedling program was launched on September 11, 2013, in partnership with Bartlett Tree Experts, of Stamford, Conn., and John Bowne High School in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens."
