September 11th Today

First Responders

Not only were 2,977 innocent men and women die on September 11th, 2001 the aftermath has caused thousands more to die years after. For many people 9/11 is a memory but for first responders it is still the reality they live in today. To date, 11,00 responders and survivors have been diagnosed with one or more of the sixty different cancers linked to the toxic fumes that were down at the Ground Zero site. Deaths from the 9/11 aftermath will soon outpace the number killed on September 11th, 2001.

The National September 11th Memorial and Museum in late May will be opening up a new permanent memorial within the memorial itself called “The Glade”. The Glade is “a pathway to honor the ongoing sacrifice of rescue, recovery and relief workers, and the survivors and members of the broader lower Manhattan community, who are sick or have died from exposure to toxins in the aftermath of 9/11.” It also “recognizes the courage, selflessness and perseverance of the men and women of the rescue and recovery effort.” September 11th though it happened almost 18 years ago still is relevant in everyday life.
